A three-thousand-year-old canoe has been found in a Wisconsin lake.  The Wisconsin Historical Society said Thursday that a dugout canoe recovered from Lake Mendota last May is the oldest canoe ever found in the Great Lakes region, and was used by indigenous people around the year 1000 BC.  They say the 14-foot canoe was carved from a single piece of white oak and was found near the same place where a 12-hundred-year-old canoe was discovered last November.  Both canoes are being restored by preservationists.

 Republican governor candidate Tim Michels is changing his position on exceptions to Wisconsin’s abortion law.  Michels said in a radio interview on Friday he would sign a bill allowing abortions for women and girls who are pregnant because of rape or incest.  The state’s 1849 law bans all abortions unless the mother’s life is in danger.  Statewide polling shows the vast majority of Wisconsinites support legal abortions for women who become pregnant after being raped or as a result of incest.  Michels

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is warning hunters to be very careful when handling wild birds this waterfowl hunting season because of the threat of avian flu.  The flu virus first showed up in Wisconsin last March and the DNR warns that waterfowl are more susceptible to the virus than other game birds so hunters should proceed with caution.  The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service advises wearing gloves and washing hands thoroughly when done.

U.S. Marshals arrest more than a dozen accused criminals during a four-day operation this week.  The U.S. Marshals Service says 15 suspects were arrested in Marathon and Wood Counties.  The U.S. Marshals Service also says many of them are facing drug charges and at least one is facing child sex charges.

Hundreds of thousands of people in Wisconsin are eligible for federal student loan relief.  A recent announcement from the White House shows how many student loan borrowers are eligible in each state.  In Wisconsin it’s 685,100 borrowers that can get ten-thousand dollars in student loan relief.  The White House also says there are 412, 700 Pell borrowers in Wisconsin eligible for up to 20-thousand dollars in relief.

 Another day, another doubler. Kwik Trip on 4611 8th St. in Wisconsin Rapids sold a winning Badger 5 Double Jackpot ticket for the Thursday, September 22 drawing, going from $40,000 to $80,000. The Double Jackpot win marked the fifth time a Badger 5 jackpot has doubled this month. During September, in addition to the standard Badger 5 drawing, the Lottery is conducting a double jackpot drawing. If the Badger 5 jackpot is won and a doubler is drawn, the jackpot is doubled for that drawing. The limited-time offer has hit all over Wisconsin.

The Eau Claire County Parks & Forest Department announces that all trails at Lowes Creek County Park will be closed to the public on September 24th and 25th. The Wisconsin High School Cycling League will be hosting race events both days. Trails will re-open for all public use again on Monday, September 26th.
