Local Murder Case Awaits Trial Location

Prosecutors may have to prove where an elderly Altoona man was killed before they can go to trial.  Lawyers for the pair accused of killing 79-year-old Dennis Schattie last spring told a judge yesterday no one knows for sure where Schattie died, so it’s not clear where the pair can be tried.  Prosecutors say Tracey Clark and her boyfriend killed Schattie so they could inherit his house and car.  His decapitated body was found in Rockford, Illinois last April.

Prosecutors Expected To Wrap Up Today

The lead detective in the Waukesha Christmas Parade attack investigation says Darrell Brooks Jr. never told them why he did it.  Detective Jay Carpenter spent another day on the stand yesterday.  He told the jury that he was originally cagey with Brooks after his arrest to see if Brooks was telling the truth.  Brooks, when it was his time to ask questions, asked the detective why he wasn’t more honest.  Carpenter said he wasn’t sure Brooks drove through the parade

Authorities Look For Answers In Bonfire Explosion

The sheriff in Shawano County says he’s interested in finding-out what happened, not ticketing people for underage drinking at the weekend bonfire that exploded.  Authorities yesterday made it clear they are not looking to punish the high schoolers who were likely drinking at the early Saturday bonfire in the Town of Maple Grove.  It’s still not clear just what caused the fire to explode, or who poured what into the fire.  As many as 40 people were hurt when the

Father Files Lawsuit Against State Lawmaker in Deadly Crash

The father of the little girl killed in a crash in far northern Wisconsin last summer is now suing the state lawmaker who was involved.  The father of five-year-old Khaleesi Fink filed the suit in Ashland County last week.  He accuses state Senator Janet Bewley of being distracted when she pulled out in front of the car his daughter was in back in July.  Police say the little girl died in the crash, her mother later died at the hospital.  The lawsuit

EC Health Dept. Plans Vaccination Clinics at Schools

Eau Claire’s health department is taking its vaccination clinics to local schools.  The city/county health department yesterday said it will start at South Middle School next Wednesday, and then move to Northstar Middle School, and finally DeLong Middle School.  Public health managers say they want to get more kids vaccinated against the coronavirus.  Numbers show very few kids in Wisconsin have gotten their shots or boosters.

Michels Vows to Tackle Crime

The Republican running for governor in Wisconsin says he’s going to tackle crime on day one. Tim Michels told a crowd in Milwaukee yesterday that he’s going to speak to criminals on election night if he wins, and again on inauguration day.  Michels says he wants to make it clear that he won’t tolerate crime in the state.  Michels is focusing on crime in his bid for governor, but didn’t offer any specifics of just what he plans to do.

Elections Commission Preps For Voting

The Wisconsin Elections Commission says it’s not sure about 12 thousand requests for absentee ballots.  The Commission yesterday said they sent postcards to over 12 thousand voters who requested an absentee ballot be sent to an address other than the one that’s on file.  The Elections Commission says the postcards are supposed to guard against people ordering absentee ballots for others.  The Commission will also send a postcard to the same 12-thousand-plus voters early next month informing them that someone asked for

Waukesha Christmas Parade Trial Continues

The man charged with driving into a Wisconsin Christmas Parade last year is representing himself in his trial.  Darrell Brooks from Milwaukee called his first witness this morning.  He’s charged with six counts of first-degree intentional homicide along with 61 counts of endangering safety among other felonies.  Judge Jennifer Dorow later ordered him out of the courtroom for frequent interruptions not long after he called his witness, a Waukesha parade participant.

Man Caught, Stolen Electronics Hidden in Pizza Box

New Tracking Tool Tracks WI PFAS

 The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has a new tool on its website to track PFAS chemical information.  The DNR says the goal is to help Wisconsin leaders be able to address PFAS problems and limit exposure.  The tool can be used to find areas of known PFAS contamination statewide.  It can be found on the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources website.
