JJ Watt Retires

All Pro defensive lineman JJ Watt is retiring from the NFL.  The Pewaukee, Wisconsin native announced on Twitter today that Sunday was his infant son’s first NFL game and it was his last NFL game at home.  The Arizona Cardinals have two road games to close out the season.  The former Wisconsin Badger was drafted by the Houston Texans with the 11th overall pick in 2011 and became an All Pro in his second season.  He currently has 111-and-a-half sacks for his career.

Pediatric Flu Death Confirmed in WI

 A 14-year-old from Green Bay is the state’s second pediatric flu death. Ava Schmidt’s friends and family remembered her yesterday. The state’s Department of Health Services says she is only the second person under 18 to die from the flu in Wisconsin this year. The state is not identifying the other person. Wisconsin’s flu season usually peaks about this time of year. Doctors and public health managers say there is still time for people to get a flu shot.

Electrical Problem Likely Cause of Home Fire

 A fire on the day before Christmas was likely traced to an electrical issue. Firefighters in Eau Claire say three pets died in a fire at a home in Seymour Saturday afternoon. No people were hurt in that blaze. Township Fire and the Eau Claire Fire Department responded to the fire. Investigators say it looks like an electrical problem sparked the fire.

EC County Looks To Invest Millions

The latest Census snapshot shows Wisconsin gained about 12 thousand people. The Census Bureau released the numbers for the past year last week. The numbers show Wisconsin gained nearly 12 thousand new residents. Many of those people moved into the state. The Census numbers also show more deaths than births in Wisconsin. Wisconsin is doing okay, especially compared to our neighbors.  Lake Mendota is frozen over, but the DNR is urging patience for ice fishers. The state declared the lake frozen on Christmas Day. The DNR says ice has to hold for 24 straight hours to be officially declared frozen. The DNR says you should wait til there’s about four inches of ice on the lake before heading out to fish or drive on the ice. Even with the past week’s bitter cold, that may take a few days.
