The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls has received the 2026 Small Business Development Center Excellence and Innovation Award from the U.S. Small Business Administration’s (SBA) Wisconsin District.
The recognition comes during National Small Business Week, May 3-9, which celebrates the critical role small businesses play in driving economic growth and innovation across the country.

Led by Director Katherine Fossler, the UWRF SBDC was honored for its strong community impact, innovative programming and commitment to helping entrepreneurs succeed. The center provides no-cost consulting and business education to entrepreneurs across Pierce, Polk and St. Croix counties, supporting business startup, growth and job creation.
The SBA award reflects not only programmatic success but also the center’s ability to deliver results beyond its immediate service area. Among Wisconsin’s 10 SBDC centers, UWRF distinguished itself through innovation, efficiency and broad statewide impact.
“We are incredibly honored to receive this award. It is a privilege to support entrepreneurs who have the courage and determination to build businesses that strengthen our communities and create opportunity for others,” Fossler said. “The impact we are able to create is the result of strong collaboration and shared commitment among our dedicated UWRF SBDC team, UW–River Falls, the Wisconsin SBDC Network, the local entrepreneurial ecosystem and the U.S. Small Business Administration.”
Located within the St. Croix Valley Business Innovation Center (SCVBIC), the UWRF SBDC continues to expand its reach through training programs, one-on-one advising and partnerships that strengthen the region’s business ecosystem.
