Salt is an important tool in fighting snow and ice this time of year and the La Crosse Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department wants residents to know about salt and how to use it safely.
The department has kicked off its Salt Smart campaign to raise awareness and educate the public about the risks salt poses to vegetation, wildlife and roadways by the excessive use of salt. The campaign is a joint effort by the city of La Crosse, Habitat for Humanity and La Crosse Area Waters. Yesterday, the first workshop in the program was held at the Black River Beach Neighborhood Center. Participants learned about the effects of too much salt on roads and alternatives to salt, such as sand and non-toxic de-icers.
