- 1143: – The Treaty of Zamora is signed, establishing Portugal as an independent kingdom.
- 1775: – General George Washington informs Congress of espionage by a letter intercepted from Dr. Benjamin Church to the British commander.
- 1813: – Shawnee chief Tecumseh is defeated.
- 1877: – Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce Indians surrenders to U.S. Cavalry troops.
- 1908: – Bulgaria proclaims its independence from the Ottoman Empire.
- 1910: – Portugal becomes a republic after a revolt against King Manuel II.


- 1930: – An airship crashes in France, killing most of the crew.
- 1936: – The Jarrow March, a protest against unemployment, begins its journey to London.

- 2011: – In the Mekong River massacre, 13 crew members are murdered after their cargo boats are hijacked.
- 2017: – The New York Times publishes its investigation into sexual misconduct allegations against Harvey Weinstein, an event considered pivotal to the #MeToo movement.
