Law enforcement is now in contact with a man they believe tried to fake his death.
The Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office says the sheriff has had video and phone calls with Ryan Borgwardt. Sheriff Mark Podoll says he initially thought the father and husband of three died while kayaking, but started to think he faked his death and left the country during an investigation earlier this month. Investigators say Borgwardt got a second passport, recently got a new life insurance policy, and was in contact with a woman from Uzbekistan. The sheriff says his exact location isn’t known, but is expected to be in Eastern Europe.
The department says it’s planning on seeking restitution for the cost of search efforts — about 35-to-40 thousand dollars.
