As we slip into the end of October and into Halloween week, it is almost scary to think about how fast time creeps by! Boo! We get it.

For that reason, we try to simply things a bit with a slower start to your Saturday. It’s a “scroll down memory lane.” This is just an easy look back at things that happened on these days in history before we head out to make new history today. So, grab your favorite sippin’ drink and let’s scroll!

On this day:

In 1682, the city of Philadelphia is founded by William Penn.

In 1904, the New York City subway opened for business. It was the first rapid transit subway system in the United States.

In 1925, Fred Waller was awarded a patent for water skis.

In 1954, actress Marilyn Monroe filed for divorce from New York Yankees slugger Joe DiMaggio just nine months after they wed. Monroe cited mental cruelty in her divorce petition. The divorce became final a year later.

In 1954, Walt Disney’s first television anthology program, “Disneyland,” premiered on ABC. The show was later renamed “The Wonderful World of Disney.”

In 1964, Sonny Bono married Cher LaPierre in Tijuana, Mexico. The couple divorced in 1975.

In 2002, Dallas Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith became the NFL’s all-time rushing leader, passing the mark of 16,726 yards held by Hall of Famer Walter Payton.

In 2013, Velvet Underground co-founder Lou Reed died on this date at the age of 71. Reed was best known for his solo rock classic “Walk on the Wild Side.”

In 2015, Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez filed for divorce after just two years of marriage.

In 2015, soccer star Abby Wombach announced she would be retiring from the sport. She played her last game in December in New Orleans during the U.S. 10-game Victory Tour after their win at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

In 2018, a gunman opened fire at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in an antisemitic attack. 11 people were killed and six were injured.

In 2019, California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency after multiple fires spark across the state.

In 2022, Elon Musk completed the 44-billion-dollar deal to purchase twitter. He immediately fired four executives once in control.
