This is our weekly look back at events that happened on these days in history before we head out to make new history today. So, grab your favorite sippin’ drink and let’s scroll!

On this day:

In 1792, George Washington laid the cornerstone to “The President’s House” at 16-hundred Pennsylvania Avenue. It later became known as “The White House.”

In 1903, Boston wins baseball’s first World Series.

In 1914, the gas mask was patented by Garrett Morgan.

In 1945, businessman Milton Hershey died at the age of 88. He founded Hershey’s Chocolate Company.

In 1950, the film “All About Eve” opened in theaters across the country. The film later went on to win a record eleven Academy Awards.

In 1957, Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra teamed on ABC Television to introduce a new automobile known as the Edsel.

In 1974, Hall-of-Fame television host Ed Sullivan died in New York City at the age of 72. “The Ed Sullivan Show” became the most famous variety show in the history of television.

In 1983, the first cellular telephones were introduced.

In 1994, the first Netscape Navigator web browser hit the world wide web. Before Microsoft’s Internet Explorer became the dominant browser, Netscape Navigator was the most popular way to connect to the Web. The source code history of Netscape Navigator continues today with Mozilla Firefox.

In 2010, all 33 miners trapped in a mining accident in Copiapo, Chile were brought to the surface after surviving 69 days underground.

In 2015, former NBA player Lamar Odom was found unconscious at a Las Vegas brothel. Odom had reportedly been at Dennis Hoff’s Love Ranch South for days and was using an herbal substitute for Viagra.

In 2019, U.S. Olympic athlete Simone Biles became the most decorated gymnast after she won her 25th metal in Germany.

In 2021, William Shatner became the oldest person to reach space when he flew aboard a Blue Origin mission. Shatner was 90 years old on the trip.

In 2023, “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” was released in theaters. The concert film grossed over 267-million dollars at the box office worldwide making it the highest grossing concert or performance film of all time.

That brings us here to this day.
