The bald eagle has been part of the Great Seal of the United States since 1782 but there has never been a push to name it America’s National Bird.
Several Minnesota lawmakers are trying to change that with the introduction of a bipartisan bill to give the bald eagle that title. Democratic Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith are working with Wyoming Republican Senator Cynthia Lummis to push the bill through the Senate. A companion bill has also been introduced in the House of Representatives and is being supported by all eight Minnesota representatives.
