A 17-year-old is dead in a shooting that happened at the end of Milwaukee’s 53rd Annual Juneteenth celebration yesterday.
A 15-year-old was also shot and seriously injured at about 9 p.m. last night in Washington Park. Deputies say a 17-year-old suspect opened fire with an automatic weapon hitting the two teenagers. The 17-year-old from Milwaukee died later a local hospital. The wounded teenager walked into the hospital seeking treatment. A Milwaukee County detective on the scene fired at the suspect, who was arrested and taken into custody without incident a short time later. Investigators say the accused shooter was previously arrested in May for being a felon in possession of a handgun but was out on a 750-dollar bond at the time of the shooting.
The incident happened after tens of thousands had gathered along Martin Luther King Jr. Drive for the Juneteenth celebration put on each year by the Northcott Neighborhood House. The event was ended early by organizers due to multiple fights involving “large groups of unsupervised youth.” The fights continued even as people left the event. Police say other shooters were likely involved in the incident which is under investigation.
