Fewer Restraint Incidents in Schools

News | April 24, 2024 | 0 | by Morgan McCarthy

The number of kids in Wisconsin who had to be physically separated or restrained in school is down from a year ago.

The state’s Department of Public Instruction yesterday released its annual report on seclusion and restraint.  The report shows schools used seclusion over five thousand times during the last school year, and had to restrain a student more than six thousand times.  Restraint means someone had to lay hands on a student, while seclusion means a student was put in a room and physically not allowed to leave.  State Superintendent Jill Underly said while the numbers are down, she hopes that schools across Wisconsin can find ways to limit their need for seclusion and restraint.  But she said that will likely take more support from the state budget.
