A law barring the sale of knock-off and untested lighters has been approved in Wisconsin.
Governor Tony Evers signed the law this morning. He says the law is intended to reduce the use of lighters that fail American Society for Testing and Materials standards. A fire in Pittsville that resulted in the death of a child in 2008 caused advocacy efforts from the Pittsville Fire Department and local educators. Evers signed the law at Pittsville Elementary School this morning. Laws like Wisconsin Act 271 have been introduced almost every year since 2009, but haven’t passed through both the Assembly and Senate until this year.
