A bill has been signed criminalizing sexual misconduct committed against a student by a school staff member or volunteer.
The bipartisan measure defines sexual misconduct as “verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature.” Those found guilty will be charged with a Class One Felony, spend up to three and a half years in jail, and permanently have their license revoked by the state Department of Instruction. According to a 2004 report by the U.S. Department of Education an estimated ten-percent of K-thru-12 students experience sexual misconduct by a school employee before they graduate.
