Milwaukee did not set a record for homicides in 2023.
The city’s homicide count for last year stands, for now, at 161. That’s down from the 215 murders in Milwaukee in 2022, and the 194 killings in the city in 2021. Milwaukee’s mayor is crediting the drop on partnerships between his office and the community. Milwaukee saw three straight record years for homicides as part of a general spike in crime. While there were just 161 homicides in Milwaukee in 20023, there were 804 non-fatal shootings. But that too, was down from the year before.
