The Universities of Wisconsin Board of Regents won’t go along with a plan to unlock millions of dollars in funding in exchange for a freeze on diversity, equity, and inclusion positions.
The regents rejected the proposal on a 9-to-8 vote in a special meeting Saturday. The rejection came less than 24 hours after UW officials announced they’d reached a compromise with Republican lawmakers. The Republican-controlled state Legislature recently withheld 32-million dollars that would because of GOP anger over the DEI programs. Thirty-two million is how much money Republicans estimate the universities would spend on DEI initiatives over two years.
