University of Wisconsin regents are expected to sign off soon on a deal between UW-system officials and Republican lawmakers.
Under the compromise agreement reached Friday, the system will freeze hiring for diversity positions through the end of 2026 and shift more than 40 diversity positions to focus on what the arrangement calls “student success.” The system also will eliminate any statements supporting diversity on student applications and create a position that focuses on conservative political thought. In exchange, GOP legislators will release money to fund for pay raises for UW employees, and free up about 200-million dollars UW-Madison officials say they need to build a new engineering building and renovate dorms at the Madison and UW-Whitewater campuses.
