Lawmakers Look to Limit Tax Hike Powers

Wisconsin lawmakers are looking to take the first step toward making it harder to increase taxes in the state this week.

The State Assembly is scheduled to vote on a constitutional amendment that would require a two-thirds majority vote in the legislature in order to raise taxes. The idea is to stop the governor, and governors in the future, from being able to raise taxes on their own. Republicans support the plan, Democrats don’t. The amendment will have to pass the legislature this year, and again next year, before voters could have their say in 2024.
