Milwaukee has a plan to become the most walkable downtown in the Midwest in the next 20 years.
The city is moving ahead with its Connecting MKE: Downtown Plan 2040. Part of the idea is to shift away from cars and trucks, and make the city more pedestrian friendly. Milwaukee’s Department of City Development says that will require expanding sidewalks and bike lanes, and slowing down traffic. There will also be a focus to get people on scooters, city buses, and The Hop. The push to have a more walkable city comes as Milwaukee continues to struggle with reckless driving that has led to a number of deadly crashes this year.
