The CDC says contaminated eye drops now recalled by the FDA have caused three deaths and blindness in at least eight people.
The CDC blames a bacteria known as Pseudomonas for at least 68 recent eye drop contamination cases in 16 states, some of which have caused death, blindness and corneal infections that don’t respond to medication. Some patients have even needed surgical removal of their eyeballs. Dr. Omar Awad, a corneal transplant expert in Minnesota, says he’s concerned that many people will be afraid to use eye drops commonly prescribed for a number of conditions.
