FROM THE MENOMONIE POLICE DEPARTMENT:
On January 11, 2019 at approximately 10:06 AM the Menomonie Police Department received a report of an armed intruder in the Menomonie Middle School. The school went into lockdown as law enforcement responded. Upon arrival law enforcement secured the school grounds and conducted a search for a possible suspect. After conducting a search and an investigation it was determined to be a false complaint.
A law enforcement presence will remain on scene to assist with the safety of students, faculty and parents arriving to take children home. It should be noted there were students that were located outside of the Middle School during the lockdown. They were subsequently bused to the Hockey Arena located at the Dunn County Recreation Park for their safety. After the Middle School was determined to be safe the students were returned to school to continue their studies or to be picked up by their parents.
Given the grave nature of this potential threat the Menomonie Police Department understands the heightened anxiety that impacts students, faculty, parents and the community at large. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation throughout this incident and we will continue to work diligently to ensure the safety of our community’s children.
Additionally, the Menomonie Police Department recommends that parents talk to their children about school safety, being alert for suspicious activity and to immediately contact school/law enforcement officials in the event of witnessing something suspicious.
