Today is Saturday, June 18th, the 169th day of the year.  There are 196 days until the end of the year.

On this day:

In 1815, the Battle of Waterloo began in Belgium.

In 1873, Susan B. Anthony was fined 100 dollars for attempting to vote in the 1872 election — the fine was never paid.

In 1898, Atlantic City, New Jersey, opened their world famous Steel Pier. 

In 1927, the United States Postal Service offered the first postage stamp featuring the name of a living American.  The special, ten-cent stamp commemorated Charles Lindbergh and his historic flight across the Atlantic Ocean.

In 1928, aviator Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean during a flight from Newfoundland to Wales.

In 1940 Winston Churchill’s “this was their finest hour” speech urging perseverance during Battle of Britain delivered to British House of Commons.

In 1942 Bernard W Robinson became the 1st African American to ensign in US Navy. 

In 1959 The 1st telecast is transmitted from England to the US.

In 1996, Federal prosecutors in California charged Theodore Kaczynski in four Unabomber attacks.

In 2000, Emmy award winning actress Nancy Marchand died just one day before her 72nd birthday.  Her best known roles included Margaret Pynchon on “Lou Grant” and Livia Soprano on “The Sopranos.” 

In 2011, saxophone legend Clarence Clemons died at the age of 69.  Clemons was best known for his work with Bruce Springsteen’s backing band, The E Street Band.  

In 2013 Russia passes a law banning foreign same-sex couples from adopting children.

In 2016, Chelsea Clinton welcomed her second child, Aidan Clinton Mezvinsky, with husband Marc Mezvinsky.   

In 2018, President Trump orders the creation of the sixth branch of the U.S. military.  It would be known as the space force.

In 2020, the U.S. Supreme Court blocked then President Trump’s bid to end the Obama-era Dreamers Program.   This meant Dreamers could stay in the country to work and go to school.

World record for greatest duration for a single lighting flash of 17.1 seconds during thunderstorm over Uruguay and Argentina according to World Meteorological Organization.

And that brings us here to this day.
