Prosecutors in Wisconsin would need a judge’s permission before dismissing gun charges against felony suspects under a new plan at the Wisconsin Capitol.
Lawmakers held a hearing on the proposal yesterday. The idea, Republican state Senator Van Wanggaard said, is to make sure the prosecutors don’t toss-out weapons charges as part of a plea deal or to avoid a lengthy trial. Wanggaard said too many felons are getting away with carrying guns in the state. Democratic Senator Lena Taylor from Milwaukee said Wisconsin is not going to be able to “mass-incarcerate” its way out of its problems with gun violence.
She warned that limit prosecutors will mean more people in jail, and a longer wait for trials.
