ECPD Releases Update on Officer Involved Shooting

Local authorities recently offered an update on the Officer-Involved Shooting Death that occurred earlier this month- below is that update.

UPDATE 

On November 3, 2021, the Eau Claire Police Department was involved in the fatal shooting of a man who had broken into a residence and stabbed a woman. 

Per Wisconsin State Statutes and Eau Claire Police Department policy, investigations of this nature are investigated by an outside law enforcement agency. The Wisconsin Department of Justice – Division of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is currently investigating this incident.  

The subject, who was pronounced deceased at the scene, has been identified as LeKenneth Q. Miller DOB 2/14/1991.

The officers involved in the shooting are Officer Kristopher O’Neill, a 24-year veteran of the department and Officer Jason Kaveney, a 19-year veteran of the department. 

The initial investigation has determined officers responded to a residence on the 400 block of Selma Street for a  Chad Hoyord Derek Thomas Kelly Thompson Dena Clark

disturbance. The communications center received a 911 hang up call. Upon callback, the caller said LeKenneth Miller had Deputy Chief Deputy Chief Administration Communications Center

broken into the residence, which was occupied by two women. Once inside, Miller stabbed a woman multiple times. A second woman was able to escape to seek safety. 

Miller was armed with a knife when officers entered. One officer discharged their firearm striking Miller. Officers and EMS attempted lifesaving efforts, which were unsuccessful, and Miller was pronounced deceased at the scene.  

Officers and EMS rendered aid to a female victim with serious stab wounds. The victim was transported to a local hospital then airlifted to a regional medical facility.  

Per department policy and best practices, the officers are on administrative assignment pending review of the  investigation. In addition, an internal administrative review of this incident will be conducted. The results of this investigation will include a full disclosure of the investigation and community review. 

Agencies that assisted the Eau Claire Police Department during this incident include the Eau Claire Fire Department and the Eau Claire County Sheriff’s Office.
