At least two mayoral races are proving to be historic. New York City elected Eric Adams as its second Black mayor while Boston appears to have chosen the first woman and first person of color. Michelle Wu gave a victory speech after her challenger conceded. And in the two races for governor held yesterday, Virginia’s Glenn Youngkin is celebrating after defeating Democrat Terry McAuliffe but there’s still no decision in New Jersey.
The future of policing is changing in at least one city. Voters in Cleveland approved changing oversight of the police department. A Civilian Police Review Board will investigate complaints against officers, giving residents the final say in disciplinary action.
Minneapolis also had the chance to replace its police department but voted no. The ballot measure was sparked by last year’s killing of George Floyd by a former cop.
