Wisconsin’s coronavirus vaccinations have slowed to a crawl.
The state’s Department of Health Services says the preliminary vaccine count from last week is just under 26-thousand doses. That number is likely to rise, but Wisconsin has been averaging about 37-thousand doses per-week for the past three weeks. DHS says just over 51-percent of people in the state have had at least one dose of the vaccine. That’s about where the state has been for the past few months.
The University of Wisconsin is not requiring students be vaccinated to return to class this fall, but the school is certainly doing all it can to get students vaccinated.
UW President Tommy Thompson yesterday announced a new vaccine lottery with about a half million-dollars in scholarships as the prizes. Thompson says there will be 70 one-time, seven-thousand-dollar scholarships offered to vaccinated students at all campuses except the main campus in Madison. The only catch is that 70-percent of students must get their shots by October 15th in order for everyone to qualify.
UW-Madison says it is looking at an incentive program of its own. Thompson says he doesn’t know yet just how many students are vaccinated, but it may be close to the state’s average of about 50-percent.
