Local health departments cannot close private or religious schools for health emergencies.
The Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled four-to-three today in favor of five private schools that challenged a Dane County order to convert to virtual learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dane County health officials say the ruling will make it much harder to prevent and contain future public health threats. The High Court said the health department’s decision infringed on protected religious rights.
