The Eau Claire Police Department has arrested two people in connection with a shooting that occurred on April 8,
2021, in the 2400 block of Sessions St. Witnesses indicated shots were fired from a vehicle toward another occupied vehicle. No one was injured in the shooting.
Through a combination of interviews, digital forensic analysis and neighborhood surveillance video, investigators were able to identify the suspect vehicle as well as the two occupants.
On June 4, 2021, one of the suspects, 20 year old Lefon D. C. Cantrell came to the police department voluntarily to speak to investigators about his involvement in the shooting. As he spoke to investigators outside of the police department, Cantrell suddenly fled on foot and ran into the Chippewa River near the Lake Street Bridge.
Negotiators were called to the scene and spoke to Cantrell for about 3 hours. He ultimately walked to the shore where he was taken into custody. Cantrell was arrested and transported to the Eau Claire County Jail and charged.
On this same day, investigators arrested 13 year old Xavier Luce for his role in the shooting and faces multiple charges.
Both Lefon Cantrell and Xavier Luce made their initial appearance in court on June 8th at 11 a.m. The investigation indicated this was a targeted incident and not random. No other suspects are being sought.
