George Floyd’s family is creating a fund to help businesses and community groups in the area where he died.
The family is putting half a million dollars toward the effort that’ll benefit the area of 38th and Chicago in Minneapolis. That’s where Floyd died after Derek Chauvin put his knee on Floyd’s neck for several minutes. Chauvin was convicted of Floyd’s death last month.
The donation comes after the city agreed to pay 27-million dollars to Floyd’s family as part of a civil settlement. The family is also encouraging others to get involved with the fund. That includes the sports teams in Minneapolis.
Meantime, grants of up to 25-thousand dollars are available. However, no applications will be accepted until this fall.
