It’s Derby Day.
Essential Quality is the favorite to win today’s 147th Kentucky Derby. But the trainer for “Hidden Stash,” Vicki Oliver, told CBS This Morning she’s looking to win and become the first woman trainer to do so. She says it’s been a long time coming.
Capacity for this year’s event is being capped at about 45-thousand for safety precautions. That’s compared to the regular capacity at Churchill Downs of 165-thousand. Last year’s race was delayed until September and was run without fans in attendance over coronavirus concerns.
Meanwhile, a Hall of Fame horse jockey will be looking for his seventh Kentucky Derby win this Saturday, but he’s doing it with an underdog horse. Bob Baffert thinks highly of his horse though, Medina Spirit.
Medina Spirit has finished first or second in each of his lifetime starts, but is at 15-to-one odds in the derby. Baffert is tied with Ben Jones for the most Kentucky Derby wins as a trainer.
