The nation is honoring the life of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr today. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. would have been 92 this year but his legacy lives on.
Officials with the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, where Dr. King as assassinated in 1968, say while their doors are closed to in person visitors due to COVID-19, they’ll hold a virtual celebration of Reverend King’s birthday.
Events will start at 1 o’clock and 7 o’clock Eastern. Friday would have been King’s 92nd birthday.
Here locally, The Pablo Center at the Confluence is hosting virtual celebration of the life of civil rights activist Martin Luther King Junior today at noon.
The University of Wisconsin Eau Claire says the Chippewa Valley 2021 Martin Luther King Remembrance Celebration will be livestreamed on the King Remembrance Program Facebook page. The school says the event includes readings, artwork, music, and discussions will end later tonight.
In other parts of our country, the National Museum Of African American Music opens its doors today as the nation observes MLK Day.
A select few will take part in the opening ceremony of the museum in downtown Nashville. Museum leaders say the idea began in 1998 as a way to honor the cultural contributions of African Americans. It developed into a museum to commemorate African American music and its impact on American culture and society.
The museum highlights music styles created or greatly influenced by African Americans, including jazz, gospel, R&B, and hip hop.
