Political Cliff Notes: Mail In Ballots Hit Snag, Gov. Names People’s Map Commission

There is a hiccup in the timeline to mail ballots in Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Supreme Court yesterday ordered local clerks not to mail ballots until the justices decide if the Green Party should be added to the November ballot. The Wisconsin Election Commission split on that question because of a technicality on the party’s nominating paperwork. The pause could be problematic. The Election Commission says nearly 400 thousand ballots could already be in the mail. The deadline to mail all absentee ballots in the state is next Thursday.

A couple of doctors, some local school leaders, and some people with ties to the League of Women Voters are all part of Governor Evers’ People’s Map Commission. The governor named nine people to lead the panel yesterday. The governor wants the nine to draw the state’s next political map, as opposed to state lawmakers. He says the People’s Map Commission can draw a fair map. Lawmakers in Madison say the state constitution is clear that they have the power to draw the map. Legislative leaders are not putting much stock in the governor’s commission.
