It’s Mother’s Day. A day to celebrate those good ol’ moms in our lives. How about a quick little history lesson about WHY we take a day to make sure that happens?
The history of celebrating grandmothers and mothers can be traced back to the ancient Greeks who honored the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele. In 1600s England, the celebration fell on the fourth Sunday during Lent and represented faithful followers returning to “mother church” for a special service. Over time, Mothering Sunday became more of a secular holiday where children would present gifts to their mothers as tokens of appreciation.
