WI City Passes States First Data Center Referendum

A Wisconsin city is approving a first-of-its-kind referendum targeting data center construction.

According to unofficial results published by the county, voters in the city of Port Washington approved the referendum with about 66 percent support. Now future large-scale projects that receive tax benefits will be required to secure approval from local voters. Data center construction across the country has faced growing opposition from local communities over the past year due to concerns about rising electricity prices, water usage and other environmental impacts.
