Authorities are warning Eau Claire County residents of an ongoing phishing scam.
They say criminals are impersonating city and county officials in sending emails related to things like planning, zoning, or permits. Those emails often request urgent payments — often by wire transfer — to move a project forward. The Eau Claire County Sheriff’s Office says that local government offices does not request payments that way and that folks should verify such questionable requests by contacting local government offices by using a known phone number.
