In 1939, President Franklin Roosevelt laid the cornerstone of the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C.
In 1956, Elvis Presley’s first film, “Love Me Tender,” opened at the Paramount Theater in New York City.

In 2004, Secretary of State Colin Powell resigned from office. Powell, the first African-American Secretary of State, said it was always his intention to serve only one term.
In 2007, Major League Baseball home run king Barry Bonds was indicted of lying and obstruction of justice. The charges stemmed from an investigation into allegations of steroid use.
In 2012, BP settles for four-point-five-billion-dollars in the Deep Horizon Oil Spill case.

In 2015, Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning broke the NFL’s all-time passing record. On this day, Manning became the all-time leading passer with a four-yard pass to Ronnie Hillman in the first quarter against the Kansas City Chiefs. Brett Favre previously held the record with 71-thousand-838 career passing yards.
In 2015, Holly Holm knocked out Ronda Rousey with a brutal head kick to become the new UFC Women’s Bantamweight champion. This was Rousey’s first loss.
In 2017, the world record price for a piece of artwork was broken in an action in New York. “Salvator Mundi” by Leonardo da Vinci was sold for 450-point-three-million-dollars.
In 2019, the movie “Joker” starring Joaquin Phoenix was the first R-rated film to earn one-billion dollars worldwide.


In 2020, the SpaceX Falcon 9 launched its first regular flight to the International Space Station with four astronauts, three from NASA and one Japanese.
In 2022, amid hours-long wait times for fans, Ticketmaster sold more than two million tickets for Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour. It was the most tickets ever sold in a single day for an artist.
