It’s a special time of year that seems to fly by all too fast, which is why we like to intentionally slow things down a bit on Saturday morning with our “scroll down memory lane.” It’s just a simple look back at events that happened on these days in history before we head out to make new history today.

In 1915, former cartoonist John B. Gruelle was given a patent for his Raggedy Ann doll.
In 1916, Congress activated the Workmen’s Compensation Act.
In 1954, Hall-of-Fame football coach Glenn “Pop” Warner died at the age of 83. He is credited with discovering the man hailed by many as the greatest athlete of all time, Jim Thorpe.
In 1977, G. Gordon Liddy was released from prison after serving time for his involvement in the Watergate break-in.
In 1978, Rock and Roll Hall-of-Famer Keith Moon died at the age of 32. He was the drummer for the rock group The Who.


In 1979, the Entertainment and Sports Programming Network was launched as the nation’s first all-sports channel. The network is better known as ESPN.
In 1986, Bishop Desmond Tutu became the first black archbishop of Cape Town, South Africa.
In 1989, the Senate approved legislation prohibiting discrimination against the handicapped in employment, public accommodations, transportation, and communications.

In 1996, rap star Tupac Shakur was shot in a drive-by shooting on the Las Vegas Strip. He died six days later.
In 1998, the Japanese cartoon “Pokemon,” debuted in syndication in the United States, which helped launch Pokémon into a nationwide phenomenon.
In 2003, veteran rocker Warren Zevon died after a long battle with cancer. He was 56 years old. Zevon was best known for the hits “Werewolves Of London,” “I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead,” and “Lawyers, Guns and Money.”



In 2006, hotel heiress Paris Hilton was arrested in Hollywood on a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence.
In 2018, rapper Mac Miller died from a drug overdose at age 26.
In 2019, President Trump announced he was calling off “peace negotiations” with Taliban leaders after a U.S. service member was killed in a suicide attack in Kabul, Afghanistan.
In 2020, actor David Harbour and singer Lily Allen got married in Las Vegas with an Elvis Presley impersonator as their officiant.


In 2022, U.K. Prime Minister Liz Truss appointed her new cabinet, and for the first time, none of the “great offices of state” was held by a White man.
In 2023, actor Danny Masterson was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison for rape convictions. Masterson is best known for his role on the TV show “That 70’s Show.”
In 2024, Keir Starmer became the first British Prime Minister in five years to visit Ireland.
