A new study by WalletHub compares 100 US cities based on credit card debt and loan data from the first two quarters of 2025. Madison has the third lowest debt increase, with Des Moines, Iowa, and Newark, New Jersey at first and second. Milwaukee ranks 24th. Debt is increasing the most in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and Anchorage, Alaska.
