A non-violent behavioral response hotline got its ten-thousandth call last week.
The Community Alternative Response Emergency Services, or CARES, program says it reached the milestone last Tuesday. CARES says it avoids sending non-violent people to emergency rooms or jails by sending paramedics and mental health crisis workers to respond. CARES started providing services in Madison in 2021.
