As the summer is in full swing it can be a whirlwind of activity, to-do lists, and trying to carve out time to have fun and soak it all in. It seems to go so fast. Hey, we get it. That’s why we take time to slow things down on the weekend with a simple “scroll down memory lane.”


It’s just an easy way to look back at events that happened on this day in history before we head out to make new history today. So, grab you favorite sippin’ drink and let’s scroll!

In 1613, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London, burned down during a performance of “Henry VIII”
In 1956, the interstate highway system was born with the passage of The Federal Highway Act. The legislation authorized the construction of more than 42-thousand miles of freeways from coast to coast.
In 1964, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed after an 83-day filibuster in the U.S. Senate.
In 1984, Jesse Jackson arrived to the U.S. with 48 U.S. and Cuban prisoners in Cuba after talking with Cuban President Fidel Castro.
In 1994, in a British TV documentary, Prince Charles said he had been faithful in his marriage to Princess Diana, until the marriage broke down.


In 1998, the National Basketball Association announced it would impose a lockout at a midnight deadline over salary and management issues.
In 2003, the “First Lady Of Cinema,” legendary screen actress Katharine Hepburn, died at her home in Connecticut. She was 96. Hepburn received four Academy Awards for Best Actress throughout her career which spanned six decades and included films such as “Morning Glory,” “Adam’s Rib,” “Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner” and “On Golden Pond.
In 2009, A U.S. District Court Judge sentenced 71-year-old disgraced financier Bernard Madoff to 150 years in prison for perpetrating Wall Street’s biggest investment fraud. Cheers and applause came from the New York courtroom as the judge read the sentence to Madoff.

In 2016, the Miss Teen USA pageant traded the bathing suit competition for athletic wear.
In 2017, Kendall and Kylie Jenner were accused of exploiting the legacies of Tupac Shakur and others. They removed the t-shirts from their brand that featured Shakur and other’s faces.
In 2020, Joseph DeAngelo Jr pleaded guilty to 12 murders and dozens of rapes. He was dubbed the Golden State Killer.



In 2020, actor, comedian, director, screenwriter, and author Carl Reiner died at the age of 98. He died from natural causes in his home. Reiner is best known for his work with “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” the “Ocean’s” movies, as well as many projects.
In 2022, singer R. Kelly was sentenced to 30 years in prison for sex trafficking and federal racketeering charges.


In 2023, under the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment, the US Supreme Court ruled that college race-based admission programs used to increase diversity would be illegal.
