The Eau Claire Sheriff’s Office recently commented on a 2023 jail death. Below is the message from Sheriff Dave Riewestahl :

Our office was notified that the Wisconsin Department of Justice has concluded their independent review regarding the in-custody death of Silver Jenkins in 2023 and has declined to bring charges.
On March 12, 2023, Jenkins was found unresponsive in her cell at the Eau Claire County Jail. The St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office and the Eau Claire County Medical Examiner were contacted, and each agency completed an investigation. Upon completion of their individual investigation, the matter was referred to the Wisconsin Department of Justice for an independent review. The Wisconsin Department of Justice concluded criminal charges were not appropriate in this matter.
The loss of any life in our custody is taken very seriously, we extend our continued condolences to the family and loved ones affected. We remain dedicated to the safety and well-being of all people in our care.
We will conduct a comprehensive review based on the information gathered by the above agencies. We will continue to evaluate our policies and procedures to ensure best practices. Our office is pleased that the Wisconsin Department of Justice has closed their independent review and will not be issuing any criminal charges.
We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office for their diligent and thorough investigation. Your hard work and dedication are deeply appreciated.
Sincerely,
Dave Riewestahl, Sheriff
