Discussion to Highlight Different Approaches to Affordable Housing

“Relationship and collaboration are at the core of our JONAH Affordable Housing Task Force work…”

A local conversation surrounding affordable housing is happening soon in Eau Claire. Below are the details from the Hub community:

Developing affordable housing is challenging, but successful efforts to do so are occurring in the Chippewa Valley.

Among them is the Hub, a community in Chippewa Falls where people experiencing homelessness seek temporary transitional shelter while working with a caseworker to progress in their lives.

The Hub will be highlighted at an event titled “Keys to Unlocking Affordable Housing” from 5-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, in the Riverfront Room of the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library, 400 Eau Claire St., Eau Claire.

Hub Director Becky Piper will discuss how the Hub came to be and how the organization assists people in need of housing. Piper will also outline how the Hub provides affordable homes along with its future plans.

The event is free. Local housing leaders and the general public are encouraged to attend. It is co-sponsored by the JONAH Affordable Housing Task Force and L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library.

Founded in 2020, the Hub consists of 14 units that house individuals transitioning from dependent to independent living. In addition to housing, Hub clients receive case management and coaching on life skills, financial accountability, rental history, and assistance developing a strong support system.

The discussion is the second in a three-part series of presentations about affordable housing projects in the Chippewa Valley. The first part, on May 14, featured Hope Village, an affordable housing project in Chippewa Falls. The final series discussion, from 5-6:30 p.m. at the library on Wednesday, July 9, will highlight Solis Circle, an affordable housing community in Altoona.

Event organizers hope this event and subsequent presentations offer valuable information about how different affordable housing projects can happen.

“Relationship and collaboration are at the core of our JONAH Affordable Housing Task Force work,” said Susan Wolfgram, task force chair. “In that spirit, we seek to learn from others doing housing justice work.”
