Burnout among workers is at a ten-year high.
The World Health Organization describes burnout as a “syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed,” and it includes feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion; increased mental distance from one’s job, and reduced professional efficacy. According to a recent report by Glassdoor, burnout has escalated to unprecedented highs, with the term being mentioned in employee reviews increasing by 32-percent year-over-year as of the first quarter of this year. The report also found mentions of burnout have increased by 50-percent since the fourth quarter of 2019, marking the highest rate since data collection began in 2016.
