A federal grand jury has indicted a Milwaukee County judge accused of helping a man evade immigration authorities in the county courthouse.
Judge Hannah Dugan is charged with concealing a person from arrest and obstruction of a proceeding before departments and agencies. Dugan was arrested last month after she allegedly confronted an ICE taskforce and told them they needed a judicial warrant to effectuate the arrest of the man. The indictment also accuses Dugan of directing the man and his legal counsel to exit the courtroom through a non-public door and stating that the man could make his next court appearance via zoom. Dugan is scheduled for a court hearing on Thursday.
Meanwhile, on the political stage immigration enforcement was the focus of a state senate committee hearing yesterday. Lawmakers heard public testimony about a bill that would require local sheriff’s offices to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement. Democrats oppose the bill, saying they’re concerned about ICE detaining and deporting people who are in the country legally.
