Five proposed bills are being aimed at increasing tribal rights in public schools.
Wisconsin’s Special Committee on State-Tribal Relations said one bill would allow the tribe approval power on who would be awarded lifetime licenses to teach tribal languages. Another bill would mandate school districts to send reports on American Indian children. The tribe also wants to protect its right to wear traditional tribal regalia during school events like graduation ceremonies. The bills were introduced Wednesday at a Joint Legislative Council meeting.
