WI Patient First in World for New Treatment

A Madison woman is the first person in the world to receive a new treatment for an autoimmune disease.

Officials with UW Health have outlined a new stem cell therapy for Julianna McGowan, who suffers from Sjogren’s syndrome. The illness interrupts the function of moisture producing glands, leaving patients with chronic dry mouth and dry eyes. Doctors who are heading up the clinical trial say McGowan has been able to produce saliva again since they have started the therapy.
