Governor’s Proposal Could Give WI Voters Power To Choose Referendums

The Wisconsin Legislature could be required to allow residents to propose their own referendums for state ballots.

Democratic Governor Tony Evers’ Office says he’s looking to give Wisconsin voters the power to propose new amendments and laws through a statewide ballot initiative process. Currently, only the Legislature can approve which questions appear on the ballot in Wisconsin. The proposal will be included in his 2025-2027 biennial budget. Both the state Senate and Assembly, run by Republicans, will have to approve the budget.
