Beyond Dry January? Push for Warning Labels on Alcohol

Dry January might extend beyond the month due to health warnings about alcohol use.

The U.S. Surgeon General has released an advisory with findings that low alcohol consumption might raise your chances of getting cancer. The advisory is backed by studies that link alcohol consumption to higher chances of developing seven types of cancer. The Surgeon General is asking alcoholic beverage manufacturers to add cancer risks to warning labels.

Here in our state, many physicians and researchers with UW Health are supporting a proposal to place more warning labels on alcoholic beverages.

Doctor Noelle Loconte with UW Health’s Carbone Cancer Center says surveys show only about a third of Americans know that alcohol is a carcinogen, adding that some people think it may prevent cancer, which is not true.
