Cause of National Forest Fire Under Investigation

On Tuesday, October 8, 2024 a wildfire was detected by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WI DNR) in the Bear Paw Semi-Primitive Area of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, east of the town of Mountain, WI. WI DNR, USDA-Forest Service, and local Volunteer Fire Department resources responded to the fire and started suppression activities.

The fire is located in between many rocky out cropping’s and it was difficult to get direct dozer line in. The decision was made to go indirect with the WI DNR and USDA-FS dozers and burn out for a clean control line. The WI DNR transitioned the fire to USDA-FS Incident Commander (IC) late last night. The Bear Paw Fire is now being managed by the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest – East Zone Fire.

The fire burned twenty-six acres and is now 100% contained. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
