Spontaneous Combustion Cause of Marshfield Fire

The Marshfield Fire & Rescue Department was dispatched to Tower Hall Apartments, 112 East 2nd Street for a fire alarm and smell of smoke.

Engine 3, Engine 2, Truck 1 and Ambulance 95 responded with eight personnel and was assisted by the Marshfield Police Department. Upon arrival residents were evacuating and smoke was found in the hallways. Contact was made with one of the residents who found their clothes on fire, which were located in a laundry basket. The resident attempted to extinguish the fire and evacuated the building. Fire crews were able to completely extinguish the fire with minimal water.

The cause of the fire was determined to be clothing that was exposed to cooking oil, laundered, dried in a dryer and then remained in a laundry basket causing it to spontaneously combust.
